Panel 8 Craft Panel

The bottom most panel is by some authors connected to the “craft” or “symbolic” degrees. On the altar you can see a Fellowcraft square and compasses and a Master Mason. Entered Apprentice can be found in front of the altar. The square and compasses on the right with the sun and the protractor probably refer to the worshipful master. There are (just as on other panels) symbols that we now connect to offices, such as the crossed feathers, crossed keys, level, plumb and square.

The bottom line are tools that Days finds “clear”, but he conveniently skips the ones which he can’t identify. If these are indeed tools, I suggest that the square on the bottom right corner is the Master’s drawing board.

  1. I half wonder if the instrument with no suggestion next to the square is some sort of scythe. Maybe a regional variation for turf or thatch. It would be interesting to connect with some sort of Scottish agricultural museum to see if they could identify it.
